Watchy, a Trakt alternative for tracking movies and shows

Updated

Trakt is mostly known for recording what you watch automatically from a media player. If what matters to you is keeping track of your shows, your movie watchlist and your history, this page explains what Watchy takes from a Trakt account and what it does differently.

What Watchy takes from your Trakt account

Watchy reads Trakt’s JSON export, as well as the CSV files produced by common export tools. It imports:

  • movies watched, with their watch date;
  • shows watched, with every episode seen, season by season, and its date;
  • your watchlist of movies and shows, which becomes your “to watch” list;
  • your watch history;
  • your ratings out of 10, which stay private in Watchy.

Trakt exports contain the TMDb and IMDb IDs of every title: Watchy uses them rather than the title alone, which avoids most mix-ups between remakes and namesakes.

How to import

  1. Get your export from Trakt (JSON file), or the CSV files produced by an export tool.
  2. Create a Watchy account or sign in, then open the Settings.
  3. In the import section, pick Trakt as the source, or let automatic detection recognise the file.
  4. Start the import and let it finish: each title is completed with its poster, runtime and episode list.
  5. Read the summary: titles imported, and those that could not be matched, with the reason.

An import can be undone from the Settings without touching other titles; only one import runs at a time. It works the same way as importing a TV Time export.

What changes compared with Trakt

  • No scrobbling: Watchy does not plug into any player (Plex, Kodi, Jellyfin…) or streaming service. You tick a watched episode by hand, one at a time, by season, or “everything up to here”.
  • No public API for third-party apps, no public lists, no social features.
  • An interface available in English, with TMDb titles and synopses in your language when TMDb has them.
  • A release calendar for the shows and anime you follow, and release-day notifications (Web Push and a bell in the app).
  • Anime tracked like series, with AniList data when TMDb is not enough.
  • Your data exports as full JSON or CSV.

Limits to know about

  • Titles with no reliable match in TMDb, TVMaze or AniList are not added at random: they are listed separately at the end of the import.
  • A large history takes several minutes, to respect those catalogues’ request limits.
  • A movie watched again counts once, and episode rewatches do not add up in the statistics.
  • Trakt custom lists other than the watchlist are not imported as lists.

Who Watchy is for

For people who want a simple app to track their shows and movies, with a release calendar and precise statistics, without depending on a service that can change its terms or shut down — as TV Time did in 2026. If you need automatic scrobbling from a media center, Trakt remains the better fit.
